What if the fate of all humanity rested on one man who wakes up in the middle of space and doesn’t even remember his own name? That’s exactly where Project Hail Mary begins. One of the most successful films of the year, and one you can now watch from the comfort of your couch.

The space drama Project Hail Mary has landed on Prime Video. The sci-fi blockbuster starring Ryan Gosling grossed more than $683 million worldwide and earned rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

What Is Project Hail Mary About?

Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up aboard a spaceship light-years from Earth. He’s lost his memory and has no idea who he is or how he got there. As his memories slowly return, he uncovers his mission: humanity is threatened by a mysterious phenomenon that is gradually dimming our Sun. The culprits are astrophage, alien microorganisms that feed on solar energy and could plunge Earth into a new Ice Age.

Grace is the last surviving member of his crew and the planet’s only hope. He has to find a solution in the distant Tau Ceti star system, and luckily he isn’t entirely alone. He meets an unusual alien companion he nicknames Rocky, and the two learn to communicate through sound and math. Their friendship across two completely different forms of life is the heart of the story. Even the title is a clever play on words: in American football, a “Hail Mary” is a desperate long pass thrown with almost no chance of success.

The Cast of Project Hail Mary

The film lives and dies on the performance of Ryan Gosling (Barbie, La La Land, Drive), who not only stars as Ryland Grace but also produced the movie. German actress Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) plays the tough project leader Eva Stratt. Rocky the alien was brought to life and voiced by puppeteer James Ortiz, while the supporting cast includes Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Milana Vayntrub, and Ken Leung.

Behind the Camera

The film was directed by the duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creators of hits like The Lego Movie and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard, who previously adapted Weir’s earlier bestseller into the 2015 film The Martian. The source material is the 2021 novel Project Hail Mary by American author Andy Weir.

Where and How It Was Filmed

Although the story unfolds in deep space, the film was shot entirely in England between June and October 2024. The main base was the famous Shepperton Studios in Surrey, where the filmmakers built the complete interior of the spaceship. Instead of relying on the usual green screen, they opted for real, physical sets — and Rocky was even present on set as a puppet during filming. That commitment to practical effects is a big part of why the film feels so believable. A handful of Earth-based scenes were shot on location, including sequences at the striking natural rock arch of Durdle Door on England’s Dorset coast.
