HR departments worldwide might disagree. But we absolutely do not. Office Romance, Netflix’s new romantic comedy, arrives at exactly the right moment — and with a cast that exceeds every expectation.

Netflix added the film to its lineup on June 5, 2026. Its R rating is there for good reason: this is a romantic comedy made for adults, one that blends the sharp edges of corporate life with genuine emotion and a healthy dose of humor.

What Is Office Romance About?

At the center of the story is Jackie Cruz (Jennifer Lopez), the impeccably polished CEO of AirCruz, a small New Jersey-based airline. Jackie is the kind of boss her employees are afraid to look in the eye — and her personal life is just as empty as her calendar of free weekends.

Into her world steps Daniel Blanchflower (Brett Goldstein), a high-powered attorney brought in to shepherd the company through a serious legal crisis. The chemistry between them is immediate and undeniable. The problem? They work together — and in an ideal world, the conference room and the heart should probably stay on separate floors.

The film follows two confirmed workaholics doing their best to keep things professional. But quick glances across the boardroom soon give way to sun-soaked adventures on exotic islands, and Jackie begins to realize that it is not just her heart on the line — it is the entire company.

Written Specifically for Jennifer Lopez

The story behind this film is almost as compelling as the film itself. Brett Goldstein, best known to audiences as Roy Kent on Ted Lasso (Apple TV), wrote the screenplay together with his longtime collaborator Joe Kelly during a three-hour train ride between Manchester and London.

Both are devoted fans of classic romantic comedies, and the conversation eventually turned to a simple question: who would be their dream lead? The answer was immediate and unanimous: Jennifer Lopez — the best actress in the genre, full stop. When they finished the script, they sent it to Lopez with a message: “We wrote this for you. You’re at the top of our list. It’s a list of one. If you don’t do this, we’re not going to make this film, but no pressure.”

Goldstein later told Netflix Tudum he never took it for granted that she would say yes. “We thought this was never going to happen. We had never met Jennifer — as far as I was concerned, she was a mythical creature,” he explained. “But we could write it as a dream.”

Lopez’s reaction made it clear why the project excited her. “I was a fan of his. People know that I’m obsessed with Ted Lasso,” she told Netflix Tudum. And her favorite character on the show? Roy Kent — Goldstein himself.

A New Kind of Role for Jennifer Lopez

What drew Lopez to the script most was who Jackie Cruz actually is. Unlike many of her previous roles, this is not a woman waiting to be saved or working her way up for someone else.

“Office Romance is the first time I’m the boss. I’m not playing someone with all these aspirations, who’s the maid or the wedding planner working for the rich people, she said in an interview with Netflix Tudum. “Jackie built this company. It’s usually the woman who is hoping to be saved in romantic comedies. But that isn’t the case at all here. Jackie is very powerful. She has her own life. She’s not really looking for love. She’s a very different kind of character for me to play.”

The Chemistry You Cannot Fake

The film was directed by Ol Parker, the British filmmaker behind Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018) and Ticket to Paradise (2022). Parker knows his way around a romantic comedy, and he knew exactly what he was looking for. “It’s contemporary and really cool,” he says. “It has a smart obstacle, and that’s really rare. I loved it.” he told Netflix Tudum.

When he saw Lopez and Goldstein together on camera for the first time, the relief was palpable. He recalled the advice of Richard Curtis — the writer behind Love Actually and Four Weddings and a Funeral — who once told him: “You can write the best script in the world, but if people don’t want to see them kiss, it doesn’t matter.”

Goldstein reflected on screen chemistry in his own characteristically direct way, also speaking to Netflix Tudum: “I’ve got a hot new theory on how chemistry works: It’s magic. Sometimes it works with someone, and sometimes it doesn’t. It’s about being intensely present with each other and admiring your co-star in the moment while you’re filming. If you’re both connected like that, you get chemistry.

Lopez had the final word: “You just don’t know until you meet and you start working together. But when we were filming Office Romance, you could see that there was something magical happening. When something’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.”

The Cast

Alongside the two leads, the film features an outstanding supporting cast. Betty Gilpin (GLOW, American Primeval) plays Jackie’s best friend Sydney, while Tony Hale (Veep, Inside Out 2) and Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Diplomat) round out the corporate world of AirCruz. The ensemble also includes Amy Sedaris, Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who) as Daniel’s sister Lizzy, and Rick Hoffman from Suits.

One of the film’s most meaningful touches is the return of Edward James Olmos (Mayans M.C.), who played Jennifer Lopez’s father in the 1997 biopic Selena. In Office Romance, the two reunite as father and daughter again — nearly thirty years later.
