With its minimalist bottles, distinctive scents, and creative approach to luxury, Byredo has become one of the most recognizable names in contemporary fragrance. But behind the Swedish brand is an unexpected story involving professional basketball, art, and the power of personal memories.

How Byredo Began

Byredo was founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham, a Swedish entrepreneur with Indian and Canadian roots. Before entering the fragrance industry, Gorham pursued a career in professional basketball and later studied fine art.

His fascination with perfume began after meeting perfumer Pierre Wulff. The encounter introduced him to the connection between scent and memory, inspiring him to explore how fragrances could capture emotions, places, and personal experiences.

The brand’s name comes from the expression by redolence, reflecting the relationship between fragrance and the memories it evokes.

Turning Personal Memories Into Perfume

Unlike traditional perfume houses, Byredo was built around storytelling rather than conventional ideas of glamour or luxury.

Gorham’s multicultural background played an important role in shaping the brand’s identity. One of his early inspirations came from childhood memories of India, where his mother was born.

The fragrance Encens Chembur, for example, was inspired by the neighborhood near Mumbai and the distinctive atmosphere of incense, temples, and everyday life.

While Gorham provides the creative direction, Byredo has worked with experienced perfumers to translate these ideas into fragrances. Among them is Jérôme Epinette, who helped shape the brand’s early collections.

Byredo’s Most Iconic Perfumes

Over the years, Byredo has introduced several fragrances that have become signatures of the brand.

Bal d’Afrique

A vibrant blend of citrus, florals, and warm woods. Its bright yet sophisticated character makes it one of Byredo’s defining fragrances.

Blanche

Inspired by the feeling of clean linen and freshly washed skin, Blanche combines delicate florals, aldehydes, and soft musk.

Gypsy Water

A woody fragrance featuring bergamot, juniper berries, pine needles, and vanilla, capturing a sense of nature and freedom.

Mojave Ghost

Inspired by California’s Mojave Desert, this fragrance combines delicate floral notes with sandalwood, cedarwood, and musk.

Other notable creations include Rose of No Man’s Land, an elegant interpretation of rose with a contemporary character.

Why Is Byredo So Popular?

Part of Byredo’s appeal lies in its instantly recognizable visual identity. Clear glass bottles, simple white labels, and rounded black caps have become a signature of the brand.

Its approach to fragrance is equally distinctive. Rather than organizing perfumes around traditional men’s and women’s categories, Byredo encourages customers to choose scents based on personal taste and emotional connection.

The brand has also developed a strong presence in fashion, contemporary art, and design. Creative collaborations and a consistent visual identity have helped Byredo establish an image that extends far beyond perfume.

For fragrance enthusiasts, Byredo represents an alternative to traditional designer perfumes, combining individuality, storytelling, and modern luxury.

From Niche Perfume House to Global Luxury Brand

Byredo has gradually expanded beyond fragrance into scented candles, body care, makeup, and fashion accessories.

A major milestone came in 2022, when Spanish beauty and fashion group Puig acquired a majority stake in the company, strengthening its position in the international luxury market.

Despite its growth, Byredo continues to build its identity around creativity, personal expression, and the emotional possibilities of scent.

Its story offers a reminder that fragrance can be more than a finishing touch. Sometimes, the most memorable perfume is the one that brings a particular place, person, or moment back to life.
