They say sheep aren’t exactly the brightest creatures on the planet. Hugh Jackman’s new comedy sets out to shred that myth, and it does so with so much charm, wit, and surprising depth that you’ll come away smiling and a little misty-eyed.

The family mystery comedy The Sheep Detectives is now streaming on Prime Video (Amazon Prime Video). The story of a flock of sheep that sets out to solve the murder of their shepherd is one of the most delightful film surprises of 2026.

What Is The Sheep Detectives About?

Set in a quiet English village, the film follows shepherd George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), who has one unusual habit: every night he reads detective novels aloud to his flock, convinced the sheep can’t understand a word. The opposite is true. The flock hangs on every sentence and knows a surprising amount about crime and investigation.

One morning, George is found dead. For the sheep, it’s a shock that shakes their entire world, so they decide to do the one thing they’ve only ever known from books: figure out who is behind the death of their beloved shepherd. Leading the investigation are the sharp-witted ewe Lily, the ram Mopple, who remembers absolutely everything, and the loner Sebastian. For the first time, they have to leave the safety of their meadow and face the complicated human world.

The Cast

Hugh Jackman is wonderful as the beloved shepherd George, bringing so much warmth to the role that it’s instantly clear why his flock would do anything for him. Around him is a remarkable ensemble: Nicholas Braun (Succession) plays bumbling local police officer Tim, Nicholas Galitzine (Red, White & Royal Blue) the curious reporter Elliot, and Molly Gordon (The Bear) George’s daughter Rebecca. Supporting turns come from Emma Thompson as lawyer Lydia, Hong Chau (The Whale) as innkeeper Beth, and Conleth Hill (Game of Thrones) as butcher Ham.

And the sheep themselves are brought to life by an equally starry voice cast. Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) voices lead ewe Lily and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) the ram Sebastian, while the flock also features Patrick Stewart, Chris O’Dowd, Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), and Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso).

Behind the Camera

The film is directed by Kyle Balda, the man behind animated hits Minions and Despicable Me 3. The Sheep Detectives is his first live-action feature. The screenplay comes from Craig Mazin, creator of the acclaimed series Chernobyl and the TV adaptation of The Last of Us. It may be surprising that the writer of such dark stories is also behind a lighthearted comedy, but that’s exactly why the film pairs its humor with unexpected emotional depth. It’s based on the 2005 detective novel Three Bags Full (originally published in German as Glennkill) by German author Leonie Swann.

Why The Sheep Detectives Is So Special

At first glance, the premise sounds like an adorable bit of nonsense: sheep solving a murder. But the film is far more thoughtful than you’d expect. The humor comes from the way the sheep perceive a human world they only half understand. At the same time, it’s surprisingly moving, because beneath the comedy lies an honest story about death, memory, and coming to terms with loss, themes family films rarely tackle and almost never with this much tenderness. And there’s a teaching angle, too: the film gently dismantles the idea that sheep are dumb animals.
